The Opportunity
In addition to using hydrogen, SOFC generators have the potential to easily use a wide range
of hydrocarbon fuels to produce electric power with energy conversion efficiencies up to 55%.
Systems engineered to utilize the high grade waste heat can achieve overall energy conversion
efficiencies up to 90%. This capability is a very compelling advantage with world fuel prices
near record highs and expected to go higher.
The promise of high efficiency, significantly reduced emissions and negligible noise make SOFC power plants
attractive for distributed generation applications where power quality, reliability, or air quality issues are of concern.
This high conversion efficiency makes the incremental cost of electricity very appealing.
The promise of high reliability, low operating cost and low maintenance make SOFC power plants
attractive for government and institutional applications as well. Further development is underway
to realize SOFC's potential for mobile applications, including providing auxiliary power in automotive, marine and aerospace applications.
